I just read a really interesting Time article by Amanda Ripley (author of this book) on the subject of why there seem to be more BIG disasters these days. Her point is that the storms are causing more damage than before because there are more people living in disaster prone areas (and at the same time land development in those areas is stripping away some natural protective barriers).
