The Don Wirfs Connection

Erika Totten | Historical Archives and Blood Donor Ambassador Volunteer

When I got the e-mail about this volunteering opportunity, I knew I could not pass it up. I mean, who doesn’t want to be a historical detective? I signed up for the very first shift, so I got to experience that first day enthusiasm with Auden, Logan, and the other two volunteers. I enjoyed it all so much that I signed up for more shifts. I simply could not wait to open more boxes and not only feel like I was time traveling, but also “meeting” people like me who wanted to connect with others through actions.

I already felt lucky that most of my boxes were ARC uniforms to the point where it sort of became my thing. However, during the last half of my second shift, I opened a box that changed it all for me. It was filled with t-shirts, lanyards, a bag full of pins and merch, and a photo album. Soon I noticed that they were all from different parts of the world. As a longtime traveler and current international student in the U.S., I felt an immediate connection. But who did these items belong to? I looked through the pictures on the album and found someone who seemed thrilled to meet other volunteers around the globe. Then, I saw a name on one of the credentials: Don Wirfs. Believe or not, that was not the only box filled with the memories of this exceptional volunteer.

I asked Auden, Logan, and Rebecca for permission to start a project around these findings. The team was supportive and ready to help me on this mission, giving me the green light I needed to start brainstorming. Since I learned that he was an avid and talented collector, it made sense for me to create a tribute that shed a light on that part of his time with the ARC. Below, you’ll see pictures of his many travels paired with some of the items that are now part of the archive of our chapter.

Don traveled to an outstanding amount of countries, which is something that not many people can do. Nevertheless, I would like to highlight his ability to meet with others and share despite any language barrier or cultural difference. I hope that when you see these pictures, you feel inspired to reach out to members of your community and learn about each other.

I want to thank Auden, Logan, and Rebecca for their support during this fun adventure.
