Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

The Chapter will be closed on Monday in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

But according to my ever-eloquent supervisor, “While the Chapter will be closed in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, that doesn’t mean the American Red Cross will be taking a day off from our commitment to the communities we serve. Across the country, Red Cross staff and volunteers will be involved in a variety of MLK-related projects, including the distribution of fire preparedness materials to under-served populations. “

One local project I think is cool, is Hands of Peace, an event meant to raise cultural awareness and present the power of peace. Our AmeriCorps volunteers in Astoria – Joemal Bonneau and Emily Fenwick – are coordinating and hosting the event along with a few other AmeriCorps folks. It’s a pretty big deal. I am told the Governor will be attending! So if you’re in the area on Monday, check it out!

And of course, Blood Services will remain open on Monday (as they do on all holidays) since the need for blood is constant. (FYI, did you know that the Red Cross supplies 97% of the blood in Oregon? Yeah.)

I hope you all have a good Monday!
